Take the family to MCU Park in the heart of Coney Island to see an exciting game with the Brooklyn Cyclones. The minor league baseball team is affiliated with the New York Mets and has won seven division titles throughout its history.
The team began as the St. Catherine’s Blue Jays in Ontario in 1986, and came to Brooklyn in 1999. The Cyclones got their name through a naming contest and are named after the Cyclone roller coaster on Coney Island.
The Cyclones have a local rival, the Staten Island Yankees, and the rivalry is often referred to as the “Battle of the Boroughs” or “Battle of the Bridge,” after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that separates the two teams. Other local rivals include the Hudson Valley Renegades and the Tri-City Valley Cats. Rivalry games typically sell out.
A number of Cyclones players have made their way to the major leagues, starting with infielder Danny Garcia, Scott Kazmir, Lenny DiNardo, Mike Jacobs and many others. As of June 2010, 25 players have moved from the Cyclones to major league teams.
The Cyclones’ MCU Park is considered the centerpiece of historic Coney Island. It’s a multi-purpose venue that is located just steps from Coney Island's famed boardwalk. It sits beneath the Parachute Jump, with both the Atlantic Ocean and the historic amusement parks visible just beyond the ballpark's outfield walls. Numerous large concerts have taken place at MCU, which seats about 12,000 for concerts. Bands including Furthur, Wilco, Phish and many others have had sold-out shows at MCU.
The park has also hosted championship boxing matches, high school and college baseball games (including PSAL & CHSAA Championship games, and The NYC Mayor's Cup All-Star Game), travel-team tournaments, New York Mets tryouts, and more.
